What Is The Keto Diet?

Reason I First Started Keto…

I joke with my friends about the reason I got into Keto – it’s because I just loved food too much. It sounds silly, but it’s true.

When I started the diet I wasn’t even aware that it was exactly my new way of eating the Keto diet.

No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop eating foods that I knew were bad for me.

Exploring the quickest way to lose weight fast but effortlessly, I came across the term Keto diet. It was a complete unknown to me. Not only did I know nothing about the Keto diet, but it also scared me to start this type of diet.

Reading blogs and posts about the Keto diet, I realized that there is no better and easier way to lose weight. Almost without giving up your favorite food, you reach your desired weight.

At first, I couldn’t understand how it made sense to cut out most or all carbs. But, only bad carbohydrates are eliminated, because there are a lot of foods that are good carbohydrates that our body needs.

What Is Ketosis, and Is It Healthy?

Ketosis is a natural metabolic state.

It involves the body producing ketone bodies out of fat and using them for energy instead of carbs. You can get into ketosis by following a very low carb, high fat ketogenic diet (1Trusted Source).

A ketogenic diet can help you lose weight. In the short term, you can lose weight quickly, because it reduces the body’s stores of glycogen and water.

In the long term, it can suppress your appetite leading to a lower calorie intake.

As well as contributing to weight loss, ketosis may have several health benefits, such as reduced seizures in children with epilepsy (2Trusted Source).

Ketosis is quite complex, but this article explains what it is and how it can benefit you.

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which there’s a high concentration of ketones in the blood. This happens when fat provides most of the fuel for the body, and there’s limited access to glucose. Glucose (blood sugar) is the preferred fuel source for many cells in the body.

Ketosis is most often associated with ketogenic and very low carb diets. It also happens during pregnancy, infancy, fasting and starvation (3Trusted Source4Trusted Source5Trusted Source6Trusted Source).

For ketosis to start, you generally need to eat fewer than 50 grams of carbs per day and sometimes as little as 20 grams per day. However, the exact carb intake that will cause ketosis varies between individuals.

To do this, you may need to remove certain food items from your diet, such as:

  • grains
  • candy
  • sugary soft drinks

You also have to cut back on:

  • legumes
  • potatoes
  • fruit

When eating a very low carb diet, levels of the hormone insulin go down and fatty acids are released from body fat stores in large amounts.

Many of these fatty acids are transported to the liver, where they’re oxidized and turned into ketones (or ketone bodies). These molecules can provide energy for the body.

Unlike fatty acids, ketones can cross the blood-brain barrier and provide energy for the brain in the absence of glucose.

Most “Keto” Recipes Use a Bunch of Inflammatory Ingredients…

Almost all the Keto recipes I found weren’t healthy at all. They were technically “keto”, but they had tons of bad ingredients. For example…

Many keto recipes are cooked in seed oils!!

They call for vegetable oil or sunflower oil or some other oil that is highly processed and full of bad fats. No thank you.

Those recipes also usually use chemical sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame. For me and my family, I want to avoid those as much as possible.

Finally, nearly every keto recipe I found was loaded with cheese and other processed dairy.

So I realized, if I was going to keep eating a keto diet and feeling great, I needed to take matters into my own hands…

I needed to come up with my own recipes, and I needed to get creative…

Keto foods can be absolutely delicious. However, your snack selection can often feel very limited.

In particular, keto snacks rarely have that crunch of non-keto junk foods like chips, popcorn, or crackers.

Sure, you can eat celery or raw veggies, but every day?

It’s important to find crunchy, delicious keto snacks so that it makes your diet easier and more fun. But most keto snacks you find in the store are either processed or just taste dry, flavorless, soft, or mushy.

Ketosis is a process that happens when your body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy. Instead, it burns fat and makes things called ketones, which it can use for fuel.

Ketosis Health Benefits

Ketosis can have some benefits beyond weight loss. Doctors may put children who have epilepsy on a keto diet because it can help prevent seizures. Adults who have epilepsy sometimes eat modified Atkins diets.

Some research suggests that ketogenic diets might help lower your risk of heart disease. Other studies show that specific diets very low in carbs help people who have diseases such as:

I am sure that many people still don’t know a lot about Keto diet and Ketosis and hope that my post help a little bit.
